Dearest Janet,

It’s a very beautiful fall day here in Beirut today. Twenty-five years ago this week since the massacre at the Palestinian refugee camps at Sabra-Shatilla.

“Entire families were slain. Groups consisting of 10-20 people were lined up against walls and sprayed with bullets. Mothers died while clutching their babies. All men appeared to be shot in the back. Five youths of fighting age were tied to a pickup truck and dragged through the streets before being shot.” I mean…I can’t remember how many girls they raped. The girl’ voice, with their fear and pain, I can’t ever forget them.”

Lebanon gives essentially no rights to her Palestinian refugees. Both Syria and Lebanon give them close to full civil rights including the right to work for the government, health care, education, social security, and own property. J Anyone visiting a Refugee camp anywhere and then sees one in Lebanon is shocked by the gap.

Hundreds of Palestinians gathered at the Palestinian Youth Center to observe the annual commemorations of the 1948 Nakba, or disaster, that forced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homeland, including around 120,000 who found refuge in what were originally intended to be temporary camps in Lebanon.
