PARIS: Pro-Palestinian activists hurled hostile slogans at Israeli President Shimon Peres on a Paris quay Thursday as they protested the unveiling of a plaque renaming an embankment along the Seine River after Israel’s first President, David Ben Gurion.
Dozens of protesters aboard a pleasure boat on the Seine unfurled a banner reading: “Ben Gurion Criminal, Peres Delanoe Collaborators!” , while a larger pro-Palestinian protest formed across the river from the site.
They blamed Ben Gurion, the iconic state father of Israel, responsible for expelling Palestinians from their homeland in 1948 and charged the current Israeli (occupation government with continuing illegal settlement expansion on Palestinian lands). Just before Peres arrived, three women approached the site and shouted “Palestine!”
The promenade is in the heart of Paris, on the bank of the River Seine near the Eiffel Tower.
