BOYCOTTING ISRAEL
International pressure is mounting on Israel to end the occupation. More than 1,000 filmmakers, actors, and writers recently called for a protest of the Toronto Film Festival?s spotlight on Tel-Aviv. You can read the Toronto Declaration here. Meanwhile an international boycott is growing. Neve Gordon, in a recent editorial, explains why it is time to boycott Israel. Since then he has received harsh criticism from within Israel but also a great deal of support. He says that The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaign is the only way to save Israel from itself. Launched by Palestinian activists in 2005 the BDS movement has now become a global effort. Diana Buttu, a former spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization, Gordon, a senior lecturer at Ben-Gurion Univesity and the author of Israel’s Occupation, and Phyllis Bennis, Director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies on organizing to end the occupation. The question is why did it take these people so long to realize that Israel’s apartheid regime can be dismantled only with an economic boycott, the way South Africa’s apartheid regime was dismantled? 40 years of negotiations between Israel and Palestinians have culminated in the horrors of the Gaza War; mere negotiations will lead only to a dead-end. I am glad to hear that “Boycott Israel” movement is growing. I have read in Haaretz that a few universities in Netherland have started boycotting Israel also.
There are also reports that Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has decided that the best way to resolve the conflict is through an unilateral declaration of independence and establish Palestine with pre-1967 borders as its internationally recognized borders. Several EU member nations have pledged support for his proposal. Haaretz has reported that Fayyad has a secret understanding with even President Obama regarding creation of Palestine. This is truly a very interesting development.
